The
Klein Chess Camp is run differently than most camps. We
assign players to groups of 10 according to age as well as USCF Rating.
The groups then rotate among the teachers, who have prepared lessons on
Openings, Endgame, Tactics, or Whole-game Strategy, specializing in one aspect
of the game. At most camps, players are assigned to one teacher for the
week, who then teaches all aspects of the game. In the afternoon, we have an
activity we call "Team Chess" which mixes three players from
different groups, advanced, intermediate, and novice, to discuss each move as
they play another team. In this way they learn from each other how to
apply what they have learned. We also employ one of the Physical
Education teachers from the school where we meet to coordinate activity times
between lessons. And we are the only Chess Camp in Houston that includes
swimming in the afternoon. We do not teach swimming. But the pool
has a large shallow end and expert lifeguards, so the campers (and teachers)
have fun in safety. | |||
